en - valtrexValtrex is used for treating herpes zoster (shingles). It is also prescribed for treating/suppressing genital herpes in immunocompetent (able to fight pathogenic organisms) individuals; for suppressing recurrent genital herpes in HIV (AIDS) patients; and for treating cold sores (herpes labialis). Valtrex comes as a tablet for oral use. It does not prevent against contagious diseases like those transmitted via sex. Valtrex tablets are taken as: 3 times daily i.e. one tablet every 8 hours for 7 days (for treating shingles); 2 times daily for 5 days (for treating genital herpes); used for one day only (for treating cold sores). Altering the prescribed dosage or discontinuing Valtrex without the doctor’s advice is not advisable. A missed dose should be taken if remembered soon. But 2 doses of Valtrex are not allowed, together or in close succession. Symptoms of Valtrex overdose are not known well but may include seizures, hallucinations, and kidney problem (decreased urine production). Immediate medical attention must be called in such a case. Patients who are allergic to (Zovirax) should not take Valtrex prior to consulting their doctor. Same holds for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and for people with kidney disease or immune system problems. Possible Valtrex side effects that are uncommon but can be serious include kidney failures and nervous system problems (aggressiveness, unsteady movement, shaky movements, confusion, speech problems, hallucinations, seizures, and coma). Common Valtrex side effects include headache, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and dizziness. Less common effects include painful periods in women, joint pain, depression, low blood cell counts, and changes in tests that measure how well the liver and kidneys work.
