Ultram is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain, including pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. It works by decreasing the brain's response to pain and by reducing the intensity of pain signals passed within the nervous system. Ultram comes as tablets for oral use. Ultram tablets are usually taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed, with or without food. The tablets must be taken exactly as directed. Also, Ultram can cause drowsiness or dizziness so it should not be taken before or during driving, operating machinery or any other such activity.
