Lipitor is a drug used for preventing and treating atherosclerosis (build up of cholesterol and fats in arteries). By reducing the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in blood, Lipitor helps prevent heart disease, angina (Chest pain), stroke, and heart attack. The drug is available as tablets for oral administration. Lipitor tablets are usually taken once daily, preferably the same time every day, with or without food. The doctor prescribes the appropriate dosage and may suggest a low-cholesterol (or low fat) diet. The patient should not stop taking Lipitor, even if he/she feels better, without the doctor’s advice. Also, two doses of Lipitor are not allowed together or in close succession. A missed dose should be skipped if it is nearly the time for the next one. In case of any unusual effects that might be the result of an overdose, get medical help. Possible Lipitor side effects include: digestive problems (gas, diarrhea, constipation etc.), stomach pain (or cramps), heartburn, headache, dizziness, altered vision, rash or itching, and upset stomach. Pregnant women must not take Lipitor and breastfeeding mothers should consult a doctor before using Lipitor. Same holds for people having a history of liver disease, chronic muscular disease, major surgery, and/or any blood disease. Lipitor must not be used while taking alcohol as both can cause liver problems.
