Fioricet is a drug containing a barbiturate sedative mixed with a non-aspirin medication and caffeine. It is used for treating tension headaches (caused by contractions of muscles in the neck and shoulder area) and migraines. Fioricet is available as capsules and tablets for oral administration. The unusual dosage for most patients is one or 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed with a maximum of 6 tablets daily. Extended and repeated use of Fioricet tablets is not recommended because it can lead to dependence. Fioricet should not be discontinued without the doctor’s advice. A missed dose of Fioricet should be taken as soon as remembered. But 2 doses of Fioricet are not allowed together or in close succession. Fioricet overdose may lead to unconsciousness or even death. Overdose symptoms include severe drowsiness, confusion, extreme weakness, hallucination, shortness and/or difficulty in breathing, slurred speech, lack of coordination, vomiting with blood, and unusually slow heartbeat. Immediate medical help must be called in such cases. Since Fioricet can cause drowsiness, it must not be taken prior to or during activities like driving and operating machinery etc. Patients having a history of depression or drug abuse should consult their doctor before taking Fioricet. Same holds for elderly and/or weak patients, and for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Possible Fioricet side effects include Abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, intoxicated feeling, light-headedness, nausea, sedation, shortness of breath, vomiting. Less common or rare side effects may include: agitation, allergic reactions, digestive problems, depression, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, earache, overly elated mood, excessive sweating or urination, fainting, fatigue, fever, headache, heartburn, heavy eyelids, hot spells, itching, leg pain, mental confusion, muscle fatigue, numbness, rapid heartbeat, ringing in the ears, seizure, shaky feeling, skin redness and/or peeling, sluggishness, stuffy nose, tingling. Store Fioricet pills below 86° F (30° C).
